I'm Not Allowed Downstairs

It's 7am. The light is shining through my bedroom. I'm in bed, under the covers.
My son peeked open the door. Funny smile-scowl. "You can't come downstairs." He half-giggled but tried very hard to keep a serious face. It ended up more of an angry-sneaky-scrunch.
A prisoner in my own room.
It's Mother's Day. The only clue that everyone knows is the arts and crafts all over the house. All with the word mom on them.

Soon enough, the kids walked through the door smiles wide, trying not to drop the cookie sheet. Their dad followed with the hot tea. (Smart move.)
The 6-year-old skip-bounced onto the bed and cuddled up beside me (more, like on me). The 10-year-old slowly set the cookie sheet on my lap. (My eyes widen for only a second.)
They'd been planning since the night before. The 6-year-old (who almost always wakes up first) climbed up to the 10-year-old's loft and woke her up, and they snuck downstairs. They picked flowers from the backyard, made breakfast of yogurt with fruit, origami boxes, and the littlest card.
The kids were very proud of themselves. (As was I, though I did wish they woke up later.)
The conversation quickly turned to holidays. Mother's Day got about two minutes.
"Do you know there's a Kid's Day?"
"Can I have your phone? I'll put it in your calendar?" (Umm, thanks?)
Yes, folks, there is an official holiday: Kid's Day. June 14th. News to me.
My 6-year-old: "We could have an extra 30 minutes of TV on Kid's Day."
My 10-year-old: "No. We could have a yes day."
A gleam in the 6-year-old's eye as he paused and stared off in space. Still thinking, he said slowly: "Yeeesss. A yes day."
The 10-year-old caught it before I did. He was scheming for a yes day today. "It's Mother's Day. Not Kid's Day."
His little face crumpled for a second.
Saved until June 14th.
The kids ran to wake up their siblings. (Bummer.) I finished my breakfast in bed and headed downstairs to the sound of a vacuum. Wow, the kids are really going all out.
Nope. My husband is making smoothies for them.
So close.

We started Thymely Games because when everyone's in on it together - even at 7am - that's when the good stuff happens. Get on the list and be first to play.
Go have fun!
